Adtran has joined the EU-funded Software enabled Fiber optic multisensing Network (SoFiN) project. The initiative aims to create a flexible platform for fibre-based sensing applications in critical infrastructure. Involving a consortium of eight partners from Germany, Denmark, Cyprus and Estonia, the four-year project will harness cloud connectivity and AI to improve monitoring of fibre-optic and power distribution networks as well as to reduce leakage in water supply systems.
Structural monitoring (or structural health monitoring) is an essential part of modern urban infrastructure. As the name suggests, it involves closely monitoring the performance of the structures that constitute modern towns and cities, especially those which may be vulnerable to processes like erosion, subsidence or other forms of decay.
How global warming is impacting existing infrastructures and what we can do about it?
Global warming can be defined as the rise of the average global temperature. Over the last three decades we have witnessed a constant increase in the global temperature of land and ocean which has caused changes in atmospheric moisture and rainfall.
Structural health monitoring (SHM) is the process of using damage detection and characterization techniques for critical structures like bridges, wind turbines, and tunnels. It is a non-destructive in-situ structural evaluation method that employs several types of sensors embedded or attached to the structure.
Structural control and health monitoring as condition monitoring are some essential areas that allow for different system parameters to be designed, supervised, controlled, and evaluated during the system’s operation in different processes, such as those used in machinery, structures, and different physical variables in mechanical, chemical, electrical, aeronautical, civil, electronics, mechatronics, and agricultural engineering applications, among others.
Some of the most important foundation elements of a bridge are its least visible – the abutments, piers, piles, and footings submerged under the waterline. Regular inspection, both above and below the waterline, helps to keep aging structures solid and stable.
Structural damage monitoring and sensing technologies are essential tools for ensuring the safety, reliability, and performance of civil, mechanical, and aerospace structures. They can help detect, locate, quantify, and classify damage, as well as assess its impact on the structural behavior and functionality. In this article, you will learn about some of the current trends and innovations in this field, and how they can benefit various applications and industries.
